On Waiting for Rainbows

the view outside my parents house tonight.

A lot of people look at life as a combination of rainbows, and rain. Rain is the part that you have to muddle through in order to get to the rainbow, or whatever is at the end of the rainbow. And when you get there? You'll be happy.

The rainbow is what you want. Or what you think you want. You dream of it, pray about it, hope for it. You wonder if you will ever have it. You forget all the rainbows you have already seen. Many people think that if they don't get what they want, life is hard. Life isn't fair, things don't work out the way you want them to, you never win anything... that kind of thinking can go on and on, and lead you down paths of desperation and unhappiness.

My motto is that the best will happen. Whatever I think is the best. And if what I think is the best doesn't happen, it's because I was wrong, and there is something better around the corner. I enjoy the things I already have, the place I already am in life. I have a good life with everything I need. I already have quite a few rainbows. Alex and I are coming into a very interesting time in our lives. He will graduate in a year, and then we'll choose a graduate school and go wherever feels best. I am excited about that. We have a lot of big hopes and dreams for what will happen in the next year or two. We're looking forward to a beautiful, bright rainbow. Possibly those things will happen, possibly they won't, but there will be something better around the corner... a double rainbow, if you will.

But it will not stop us from dreaming and hoping.

Maybe it's the teacher in me, but I look around me and I can see potential. Everyone in this world has potential coming out of their ears. Most people can't see it for themselves. Most people take small chances, small risks, have some fun, but stay safe. As Jim Carrey said, "You can fail at something you don't want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love." Why waste your potential on something you don't love? You could literally be anything you want. Somewhere along the line, after hearing that when we were small, we got scared and stopped dreaming. All your dreams take is a little hard work and faith in yourself.

Believe in yourself, celebrate yourself, and dream big! Anything can happen. If your rainbow isn't what you thought it was, there is usually a second rainbow hiding behind it.

You are in charge of your own destiny.

and these are my rambling thoughts on a tuesday night.
