and they said speak now

this picture has nothing to do with this post. I just miss this.
You know, I am a really huge advocate of the whole "communication is key" thing. Because if you think about it, it truly is! So many many problems could be avoided or solved with good communication. And yet, it is something that a lot of people really struggle with.

I think this is because usually when you need to communicate, it's about something you are uncomfortable with. You're afraid of spitting out your own feelings because they may be disregarded, or laughed at, or offensive. You're afraid of what the other person/people will say because it might be something you don't want to hear.

It's much easier to sit back and not say a word. But it's so much better to get it all out there in the end.

I know this.

I know all of this information. It has been drilled into me by my mother who may in fact, be the best communicator this world has ever seen. I can tell anyone and everyone how they should go about conversations, what they should and shouldn't say, how they should or shouldn't say it.

But when it comes to my own life, my own conversations, confrontations, and communications, I fail miserably.

I fall into every single trap I mentioned before. Afraid of what I have to say. Afraid of what they have to say.

My mouth gets bone dry. Sweat starts forming in uncomfortable places. Tears threaten the corners of my eyes.

It's nearly unbearable.

But it's a goal of mine to conquer this. To say exactly what I need to say, no matter the reception, no matter how hard it is, no matter the consequences.

Because words unspoken don't disappear. They stick in your mind and hammer at you with regrets when you least expect it.

So you all should be very pleased to know, that in a recent conversation I had, I ignored my Sahara Desert of a mouth, and got it all out there. No sweat, no tears, minimal pain.

It's a work in progress, but it's coming.

Say it, out loud.

p.s. i love all of you who are reading my blog, you're great!

  1. I just love reading your blog! YOU are great!

  2. This is a beautiful post. truly expressing yourself is such a lovely thing. I am all about communication as well.

  3. It takes courage is speak. It takes courage to know. It takes courage to lead and sometimes it takes faith to follow. It takes courage to wait, when the battle is long. We'll fight the fight and just keep holding on, it takes courage to stand strong.

I'm not sure why that came to mind as I was reading your post, but it did nonetheless. I love you. You did great!

  4. I can relate to this so much. I often am too shy to say what I'm thinking. I'm proud that you said it out loud.

  5. I think this is beautiful. If everyone in the world would just honestly communicate, there wouldn't be so much hatred, confusion, disagreement. We'd all learn to understand one another better.

p.s. we should communicate sometime. like, face-to-face. yes.

  6. Ha ha twilight...
    But really, go Madeline, go!
Oh and ah, thank you for posting that picture. That really encompasses it all, right up to observing who's in the background, huh

Tell me your thoughts on the subject.
